EU needs Turkey
In the beginning of October, Turkey will probably begin negotiations to join the EU. But what do ordinary Turkish people think of the European Union? ”The EU needs us more than we need it”, says the man in the street in Turkey. It seems that most people are for the membership, but at the same time the popularity of EU in Turkey is going down.

The Hämeentie bazaar
Along Hämeentie, the main street running through a hip part of Helsinki called Kallio, there are many small stores owned and run by foreigners. Asian food stores exist side by side with call centres and African clothes shops. This change in the area has occurred during the past few years. Now one can really say there is a cosmopolitan district in Helsinki.

Pioneer
Doctor Pentti Karvonen has been giving drug substitution therapy to drug addicts since the late 1990’s. At that time his work was considered illegal, and in 2002 he was jailed for two and a half years. Nowadays substitution therapy has become the standard in Finnish drug politics. Many doctors and scientists working with drug-related issues consider Karvonen a pioneer in the field. But he is still unsatisfied. He thinks that even today the rules and policies take too little account of the addict – and are bureaucratic and ineffective.
